Saturday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, a national holiday that honors our armed forces veterans and carries a hope for peace.
An armistice ending World War I -- at the time called "The War to End All Wars" -- was signed in France at 11:11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. The following year, President Woodrow Wilson designated Nov. 11 as a day of remembance as well as a day of prayer for world peace.
Schools, city and county offices will be closed Friday to mark the holiday. Banks will be open Friday, but those with regular Saturday hours will be closed on that day. Post offices will be open Friday but closed Saturday.
Faith Christian School in Dallas will honor veterans with a special event. See Community Notebook, Page 9A.
