MONMOUTH -- Western Oregon University recently named the winners of its annual student and faculty honors.
The Mario and Alma Pastega Award recipients were recognized on May 15 during a presentation in the Werner Center.
Gavin Keulks, associate professor of English and chairman of the English department, received an Excellence in Scolarship Award for academic research and publication.
Sociology professor Dean Braa won the Excellence in Teaching Award (see story, Page 3A).
Alice Spragu, assistant director of human resources, received the Staff Excellence Award.
Students Amanda Miles and Nicole Perry have been tapped as winners of the prestigous Julia McCulloch Smith Award.
Miles will receive a bachelor's degree in psychology, while Perry will graduate with a bachelor of arts in English and humanities.
The Julia McCulloch Smith Award began in 1931, as a scholarship fund for female students. It was given in honor of Julia McCulloch Smith, who died in 1930 and was a graduate of the school.
Avery Cotton will receive the Delmer Dewey Award, which is named after former Dean of Men, Delmer Dewey. It is presented to an outstanding graduating male each year. Cotton earned dual degrees in math and chemistry.
The three graduates will speak during Western's commencement ceremony on June 16.
