RICKREALL -- The Polk County Home and Garden Show, hosted by Polk Productions Inc., is gearing up for its third-annual event this weekend at the Polk County Fairgrounds.
This year there will be about 35 vendors at the three-day show, which opens Friday, May 14. Organizer Deb Thomas said about one-third of this year's vendors are new to the event.
The home and garden show doesn't have an official theme, but Thomas noted that many vendors are featuring "green" products that are made with recycled, environmentally friendly or plant-based materials.
House of Floors of Dallas will be showcasing natural cork flooring. Cork can be harvested in a process that doesn't kill the cork tree, but takes the bark, which regenerates, enabling the tree to be harvested multiple times, said Renee McBride of House of Floors.
Valley Flooring Center of Salem will be featuring a carpet made of recycled water bottles, and Green Home Renovation will display products that use plant oils or maximize the use of renewable energy.
Garden enthusiasts will find flowering plants and vegetables from Out in the Garden Nursery and Old Mill Feed & Garden.
Kitchen Craft and The Healthy Gourmet will be offering food demonstrations and samples, and Schwan's Food Service will be giving out ice cream samples during the show. Burton's Catering of Corvallis will be providing food.
Polk Productions will host drawings for prizes for a $100 gift certificate to Ragin River Steakhouse in Independence and a Kitchen Craft electric skillet. Brand Source is sponsoring a drawing for a 2011 Ford Fiesta.
Thomas said the popular Northwest "G" Model Railroad Club is making a repeat appearance at the show this year. The club will set up a portable track featuring model trains in the arts and crafts building at the fairgrounds.
