POLK COUNTY -- A man charged in a fatal slashing at a West Salem bar late last month has pleaded not guilty.

Brent W. Phillips, 32, of Salem was arraigned on an indictment Monday. Feb. 7, in Polk County Circuit Court.

Phillips is accused of killing Christopher Allen Lindsey, 24, of Keizer on Jan. 24 at the Fifty Pub & Grub tavern at at 935 Wallace Road NW.

According to court documents, Phillips, Lindsey and other patrons had been in arguments that evening. Eventually, Lindsey brandished a knife at another man outside of the bar; Phillips, who also had a knife, grabbed Lindsey from behind and cut his throat.

He then fled the scene on a motorcycle. Marion County law enforcement arrested him not long after.

A grand jury indicted Phillips last week with murder and unlawful use of a weapon. At a Jan. 26 court hearing, Phillips maintained his innocence, citing self-defense.

Phillips is scheduled to appear in court again on Feb. 28. A trial has been set for March 23.
