INDEPENDENCE -- Downtown Independence will get a brewery and possibly a brew pub next year.

Yul Provancha of Salem plans to open Area 51 Brewery in a commercial building at 370 S. Main Street, city officials announced last week.

Provancha will repair and renovate the 3,200-square-foot facility in hopes of opening in the summer of 2012, said Shawn Irvine, Independence economic development director.

"It's my understanding that the site is going to have a brew pub," Irvine said. "Having it would help pull the downtown to the south and make that area more active.

"We're excited about the improvements for the building and the potential for creating a great business inside of it."

The property is owned by Carl Twiss, according to Polk County records.
