DALLAS -- Last season saw youth football in Dallas go through plenty of change.

With funding no longer provided by the Dallas School District, Pop Warner football was introduced for the first time to facilitate the sport for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.

The good news this season is that there will be more change -- in an even better way.

"Last year we were under the Pop Warner umbrella -- this year we have our own association, and we're free to do a little more with own board," said Dave Brautigam, the Dallas Youth Sports Coordinator.

The program, titled Dallas Pop Warner Football Association, is still a part of the Mid-Valley Pop Warner League (MVPW), but now has the ability to advertise scholarships and payment plans for players in need.

Other changes include the availability of online registration and opening of the league to fourth-graders who weigh at least 60 pounds.

Pop Warner is structured to form teams by age and weight, and is split into four groups: Junior Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Junior and Senior.

Brautigam hopes to form five teams that will play eight regular season games against teams from the Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon, Salem, Keizer and Silverton associations. There will also be one extra playoff game to be determined at the end of the regular season.

All home games will be played at Dallas High.

Online registration begins May 1 and runs through May 30 at www.mvpopwarner.com. In-person registration will take place May 19 from 10 a.m. to noon and May 22-23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at LaCreole Middle School, 701 SE LaCreole Drive.
