Local candy-maker claims top honor

ASHLAND -- Dallas' own Melting Pot Candy continues to make a name for itself as owner Bonnie Andrews' now-famous jalapeno toffee, "Hot Mama," took "Best Chocolate Candy" honors at the Ashland Chocolate Festival on March 1-3.

In its ninth year, the festival held in the Ashland Springs Hotel attracted more than 40 chocolate-makers specializing in many varieties, from traditional chocolates and truffles to baked goods and raw chocolate products.

Melting Pot's jalapeno concoction claimed the "Best Chocolate Candy" honors for the second year in a row.

Fitness club set to host open house

MONMOUTH -- Monmouth Fitness Club will host an open house Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Located at 165 E. Main St., Monmouth Fitness Club will offer refreshments, door prize drawings, kids activities, a number of membership specials, and introduce its group fitness programs combining the expertise of its certified group fitness instructors and personal trainers during the event.

Class demonstrations will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 12:30 p.m. Formats will include Zumba, spinning, pump, yoga and step.

Monmouth Fitness Club instructors, staff and personal trainers will be on hand to answer questions and give tours of the facility. There will also be free blood pressure screenings and body fat testing.

Ophthalmologist practicing in Dallas

DALLAS -- Ophthalmologist Dr. Scott E. Stice is now performing procedures at West Valley Hospital's new surgery suite.

Stice will do surgical eye procedures, including cataract surgery, at West Valley Hospital on the fourth Monday of each month.

"West Valley Hospital continues to attract leading surgical specialists to Dallas, providing local residents the medical procedures and surgeries they need close to home," said Bob Brannigan, chief administrative officer of West Valley Hospital.

As an anterior segment surgeon and comprehensive ophthalmologist, Stice focuses on cataract surgery including specialty lenses and glaucoma management.
