DALLAS -- The Dallas School Board reviewed a resolution to declare the former Bridgeport and Pedee schools surplus property Monday night.
The board did not vote on the resolution, opting instead to continue discussion and a possible vote until its next meeting on May 13.
If approved, the resolution would be the first step in a proposed sale of the buildings to Luckiamute Valley Charter Schools, which currently use both campuses.
Also reviewed Monday was a new policy giving the board more latitude on sales or long-term leases of district property to governmental agencies and nonprofit entities.
Previously, the district would be required to go through a multiple step process to sell properties, including conducting long-range studies on the possibility the property would be reopened as a school, having an appraisal done, advertising the property, and appointing a real estate agent to handle the sale.
If approved, the new policy would allow the board to waive those requirements deemed appropriate if selling or leasing property to a government agency or nonprofit.
Under those circumstances, the district would still be required to seek community input and declare property surplus 60 days prior to the sale.
The proposed resolution states there has been no objection to the charter school using the buildings thus far.
"The Luckiamute Valley Charter School is an established, community-led organization that has demonstrated the ability to utilize the buildings in a manner that is beneficial for the youth of Polk County," it read.
