8/21 MI Town: Patty Taylor Dutcher

Summertime in MI Town just keeps getting better and better. The sweet corn on the cob that was my favorite treat at our recent Polk County Fair is available in our local grocery stores and in farmers markets all around the area. My next year's garden thoughts are centering around corn, green beans, zucchini and all the other good vegetables that grace our tables at this time of year. Picking fresh tomatoes, lettuce and onions for our salads every day enhances whatever we cook and serve for dinner. It won't be long before we will enjoy our first pie made from our backyard apple trees. We are still savoring wonderful blueberries and fresh peaches on breakfast cereal, pancakes and in baked coffee cakes. We'll skip the wine country tour in the south of France and take a well-stocked picnic basket to one of our local wineries for a relaxing afternoon, where we can visit with friends and neighbors in our very own community.--Mark your calendar for Tuesday, when new Monmouth Public Library Director Krist Obrist will welcome everyone to an open house.Hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., when you'll be invited to enjoy light refreshments and perhaps take a brief survey and visit with Krist, library staff members and those of us who are looking forward to all the new ideas that she will share.Krist has been the youth services librarian for several years previous to her appointment as director, following Phelps Shepherd's retirement.--It's another month away, but the days and weeks are speeding by and before we know it college football season will begin.Coach Arne Ferguson and our Western Oregon University football team's first home game is Sept. 21. We're looking forward to seeing new faces and welcoming returning team members as our Wolves host Dixie State at 1 p.m. at McArthur Field. In the 13 years we've had season tickets to the WOU football games, we have enjoyed so many golden Saturday afternoons sharing college football memories with neighbors, friends and students. Unlike many other college football games, Wolves' tickets are reasonably priced and good food is available at the concession stand.Let's all get out and support our local university and have a wonderful time.--Please be extra watchful when out and about on these summer days and evenings. We all need to be mindful of buckling our seat belts and taking those extra few moments to check for oncoming traffic before entering an intersection. There's also farm equipment using our local roads and that calls for extra attention from all of us. Take care to get home safely.
