MINET's Biz-Tech Expo set Saturday

INDEPENDENCE -- Independence will be home to a new university on Saturday. No, it's not a satellite campus for Western Oregon University, Oregon State University or even Chemeketa Community College. It's the latest venture from MINET."MINET University" will be a showcase event at the inaugural Biz-Tech Expo at the Independence Civic Center, 555 S. Main St.The expo is a reincarnation of sorts of the Independence Downtown Association Business Networking Fair. IDA handed the event off to MINET in 2012.Marilyn Morton has spearheaded the event, working tirelessly on setting the date and organizing vendors. Originally slated for an end-of-2012 date, proposed dates for the expo jumped around until June 22 was finally set in stone."We had a little trouble placing a date for it. I said 'No matter what else happens, we're having it June 22,'" Morton said."MINET University" will showcase several 15- to 20-minute presentations on valuable information to patrons -- using TiVO, programming a remote, wireless security, e-reader basics and more. The expo will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. An after-hours mixer, featuring a no-host bar from Redgate Winery, for participating businesses will run from 3 to 6 p.m.Patrons will see booths from Independence and Monmouth area businesses -- Karmic Computers, IDA, MINET and many more. A free diagnostics clinic for portable electronics will help patrons find any ailments and decide an appropriate course of action. The city waived the costs associated with having the event in the civic center -- a decision based on the expo's potential to connect the public with area businesses, Independence Economic Development Director Shawn Irvine said."For the right situation, we do occasionally comp events," he said. "This was a good opportunity to get local businesses together and better connected." Check It Out What: Biz-Tech Expo. When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: Independence Civic Center, 555 S.
