COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD: Junior sprinter receives honor

MONMOUTH — Western Oregon junior sprinter Tyrell Williams was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s Newcomer of the Year on Thursday.    Williams won the 200-meter run at the GNAC Championships in Monmouth on May 10 and placed 13th in the preliminaries at the NCAA?Division II Outdoor?Track and Field Championships on May 23.    “Given everything he has accomplished this season, I'm not sure there was anyone else that could compete for that honor with him,” WOU coach Mike Johnson said. “Not only was he great as a newcomer, but he was also an outstanding overall male athlete of the year candidate. There were a number of great candidates this year.”    Alaska Anchorage’s Cody Thomas was named Male Athlete of the Year after taking seventh in the decathlon at the NCAA Division II?Outdoor Track and Field Championships.    Western Washington’s Kelven Halsell received Coach of the Year honors after leading the Vikings to their fifth GNAC team title, tying Western Oregon for most in conference history.
