Head-on collision in fog sends three to hospital

DALLAS — Three people were extricated with the jaws of life after a head-on, two-vehicle injury collision near the intersection of Highway 22 and North Kings Valley Highway (Hwy. 223) on Thursday at 8:14 p.m.

All three were transported to Salem Hospital. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Dallas Fire Department Chief Fred Hertel said the driver of one vehicle pulled out from Highway 223 and did not see the oncoming vehicle until it was too late.

Road conditions in the area were extremely foggy with limited visibility, Hertel said. “This is our third major crash because of fog in the last month or so,” he said.

Drivers should reduce speed in foggy conditions and use low-beam headlights.

Dallas Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Southwest Polk Fire District, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Dallas Police Department and Oregon Department of Transportation responded.

No other information about the victims was available at press time.
