Infant dies during house fire

MONMOUTH – A 1-year-old died during a house fire early this morning in Monmouth.

Polk County Fire District No. 1 responded to the fire today at 1:57 a.m. in the 700 block of North Catron Street.

The home was heavily involved in fire when firefighters arrived, said Deputy Chief Neal Olson in a press release.

Two adults and two children had evacuated the structure, but the 1-year-old was still inside, Olson said in the release.

Attempts to locate and rescue the infant were unsuccessful. The body of the infant was found once the fire was extinguished, Olson said.

Two firefighters were treated for burn injuries at a local hospital. One was then sent to a Portland burn center, Olson said.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office and Monmouth police are assisting in the investigation.

Dallas Fire & EMS, SW Polk RFPD, Salem Fire, Independence police and Polk County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

The structure and contents are a complete loss, estimated at $200,000, Olson said.
